Hot Foil Printing

At Versatility in Print we have been hot foil printing for over 20 years both part time and for the last 10 years on a full time basis.

We particularly specialise in short run foil printing most of our print runs are between 100 – 1000 items at a time but we are happy to print upto 5000 items and beyond by using some of our trade foil printing partners.

Commercial Hot Foil printing has in recent years become very popular with those companies that wish to portray a high class and quality image. The number of commercial hot foil printers has dramatically declined over the last ten years as the trade foil printers have retired and these have not been replaced with apprentices coming into the industry. At Versatility in Print we have 2 fully trained members of staff to look after your hot foiling needs. We use traditional hand fed machines to create high quality and bespoke work.

The majority of our hot foil printing commercial work tends to be short and medium runs of Business Cards, Letterheads, Compliment Slips, Invites and oversize A3+ folders as well as promotional items and we pride ourselves on both the quality of our workmanship and our knowledge of materials suitable for hot foil printing.

Hot Foil printing is ideal to create special effects in metallic, holographic as well as gloss and matt finishes and is ideally suited to short run work for small quantities that might suit start up companies or short runs for specialist invitations for occasions such as silver, ruby, golden, diamond wedding anniversaries and of course Wedding Invitations for Day, Evening, Order of Service, Thank you’s ,Reply Cards, Place Cards etc....

Types of Foil Printing

Metallic Foil Printing
The most commonly associated type of printing with the hot foil/stamping method. This involves putting metallic colours onto a variety of substrates (The material you are printing onto eg:- paper or card))Gold and Silver are of course the most popular colours as you would expect, but there are approx another 30-40 other metallic colours available to choose from should you so wish.

Holographic Foil Printing
Holographic Foils are often associated with security printing for the main reason that they are difficult to copy and forge ( they are also more expensive to print with and emulate) therefore most people might be familiar with them on tickets for concerts or security labels, but holographic foils lend themselves to much more than this. They are ideal for Party invites, Serveittes/Napkins Wedding Stationery and Greetings Cards and of course Business Cards. When using Holographic Foils the ‘mantra’ in my opinion is often less is more and just using a little holographic foil can make a design ‘stand out’ and really jump off the page. Whilst a little more expensive to use they can really lift a design and turn it into an extraordinary visual design statement. Use too much Holographic foil and your design can look a little cheap and tawdry.

Matt and Gloss Foils
It always amazes me that people are stunned with the fact that non metallic foils exist and are widely used in industrial process’s . Again a wide range of colours are available across the whole spectrum. Often these non metallic foils are used to mark plastic items such as cosmetic items, plastic casings and housing for materials where they can not be effectively be printed via Pad or screen printing processes. So many of the large industrial rubbish bins and eurocrates/containers are simply foil printed in Black, this is both cost effective and durable. White foil can have stunning effects on Black and dark backgrounds. Also foil can be used on very thick items that litho prcosses can not accommodate.

Embossing and Debossing
Most people get this very confused. Embossing is when you raise an item up and out of a page, piece of card or item. Whereas Debossing is the opposite and you physically stamp into an item and create an indent. Most people get this confused and the wrong way around.

We are happy to undertake both embossing and debossing jobs to an area upto approx 4 to 5 inches square. Please be aware that the artwork most be suitable for this task and when embossing we are required to buy an embossing plate and counterforce and this can work out a little more expensive than just a normal printing plate.

Debossing is also a very practical process and particularly blind debossing ( indenting a material with out the use of foil) can look stunning on the fronts of thick brochure covers and Diaries where you have enough thickness in the material to be able to create a permanent impression. Please see the pictures with examples of this work.

Numbering
As hotfoil printers we are also able to adapt our printing press with the additional of a numbering block to sequentially number items such as Plastic Cards to create numbered membership cards or numbered security cards. Loyalty cards are also another option for nightclubs or exclusive shoppers clubs for you to be able to track members and the numbers in the scheme, please see examples and we would be pleased to offer you more details should they be required.

Full Colour Printing and Foiling
A number of our clients ask us to print in full colour and then add foil to the finished product. We are delighted to undertake these jobs and have the latest and upto date Xerox Digital printers that can print upto 350 gram stock, which can then be overfoiled if required.

Laminating
Should you wish items to be Gloss or Matt laminated on 1 or 2 sides we are able to print upto A3+ in size and this gives an ultimately luxurious finish to business cards and a wipeable finish to any other type of printing stock as well as durability.

Typesetting
Whilst few people still typeset any of there work there is still sometimes a requirement for this service. We still retain a small number of typefaces and well as the expertise to provide the service. Often typesetting is used for small runs of items or one offs such , initials or names on diaries or one or two lines of text on serviettes. Of course it can be used for many other forms of printing , but we are a little limited to the number and size of typefaces we can now offer. At time of creating this website we have the following faces available

Times Italic 18pt
Diana Italic 18pt
Dorchester 18pt
Ashley Script 18pt
Rockwell Shadow 18pt
Granby Light 18pt
Also a few fonts of KIS Mazak type – do ask for details

Simulated Spot UV
For small runs spot UV had always been expensive, we can emulate this using a substance called Mylar and a straight forward block or plate giving the same effect as a spot UV. Often on small quantities we can half the cost of traditional UV prcoess’s, just ask for more details.

Tipping
This is a form of hot foil printing often onto Plastic where you put foil onto a raised part of an item, the most commonly found use for this will be found possibly in your wallet on your credit card where the numbers on the credit card have been coloured gold or silver, this is tipping. We can also provide this service on other items, just ask for more information.

Sublimation Foil Printing or Laser –Toner Foil Printing
Yet another service we can offer for true one off or bespoke items. The process involves briefly adhering a special foil to an item that has gone through your laser printer. The Black toner in your laser printer contains Carbon this under heat and pressure sticks to the Sublimation Foil, meaning two things. Firstly you do not require a plate for the job in hand , which can be very useful on short runs such as date specific items and also it can be very cost effective. The process can really only be achieved on Paper, Card and Acetate as these items are only suitable to go through a laser printer or photocopier, it can not be achieved on leather products.

Oversized Large objects or Thicker Items
At our disposable we have a large number of hand operated Hot Foil Machines ranging from Platen Style machines upto a 9 x 6 inch print area as well as flat bed machines ranging upto a 8 x 6 inch print area. The Flat bed machines can also take upto a maximum of a 4 inch deep /thick item such as a box lid or bulky component, meaning up can cover a wide variety of printing jobs and materials.

Trade Printing
We undertake a large number of jobs for other printing houses as print finishers from our fellow printers both around the West Midlands as well as all over the UK and abroad. If you do not have foil printing facilities we will undertake your work and either send it back to you when complete or under plain brown wrapper straight to your customer, we offer a fully confidential and discreet service. We can either supply the stock or you can send us your stock for us to overprint please allow enough extra’s or overs to allow us to ‘make ready’ the job any extra stock will happily be returned to you. Most jobs we can turn around in 7-10 working days from agreement of proof.

Over the past few years these have become popular accessories and seem to be coming back into fashion. We have printed for a variety of small hotel/venues as well as for the centenary of the Morgan Motor Car Company based in Malvern. Most people often require small quantities for special occasions such as a Golden or Silver Wedding Anniversary or Wedding Celebration and we would be happy to quote for these events.

Wedding Stationery
Hot foil printing for Weddings has been one of our mainstays over the last 22 years, we can provide you with stationery from our small ‘More than Words’ Range that has been very popular and was created by our designer Lisa Bridge back in 2008. More recently we launched our Raffles range of Wedding Stationery that has been a runaway success, incorporating in one booklet, the Day or Evening Invitation along with a Reply Card, Directions, accommodation details, gift list and additional if required menu choice selector.

The other main part of our wedding stationery orders comes from bespoke commissions for those people requiring something a little different to the run of the mill everyday wedding stationery that you can find on the high st. This doesn’t necessarily cost much more than the standard designs apart from a small charge for the design artwork if required and the plates to print from. We work closely with each bride and groom to provide a tailor made solution. Please see just some of the samples below to get a flavour of commissions undertaken over the past few years.
